May 4, Back in the 70s when I started getting interested in electronics, tons of magazines catered to the hobbyist market. Popular Electronics was my favorite, and I think I remember the advertisements more than anything, probably because they outnumbered articles by a large margin. Looking back, it seemed like a lot of ad space was sold to companies hawking the tools and materials needed for wire wrapping, which was very popular for prototyping in the days before solderless breadboards were readily available. I remember beauty shots of neat rows of small, gold posts, with stripped wires wrapped evenly around them. To the budding hobbyist, wire wrapping looked like the skill to have. With a huge selection of posts, terminals, and sockets for ICs and discrete components, as well as a wide range of manual and powered wrapping tools, it seemed like you could build anything with wire wrapping.
Normal Pediatric EEG: Neonates and Children
Pediatric EEG interpretation builds on these essential skills but requires one additional element: Children are not small adults, and at first glance their EEGs could not appear more distinct, but the same techniques used to systematically analyze the adult EEG can be applied to children once one appreciates the organizational themes of pediatric EEG.
Accordingly, this chapter will not recapitulate elements from the prior chapter, but instead will focus on the development of pediatric EEG from the premature to adolescence. To make the discussion as practical as possible, the pediatric EEG will be described in the same order in which it is typically analyzed, noting first the continuity and then, in turn, the organization of the principal components, the interhemispheric symmetry and synchrony of these components, and the presence of various special features that often serve as signposts of maturation.
Finally, abnormalities are noted and described.

Medical uses[ edit ] Polysomnography is used to diagnose, or rule out, many types of sleep disorders , including narcolepsy , idiopathic hypersomnia , periodic limb movement disorder PLMD , REM behavior disorder , parasomnias , and sleep apnea. Although it is not directly useful in diagnosing circadian rhythm sleep disorders, it may be used to rule out other sleep disorders. Polysomnography should not be routinely used to screen for sleep disorders in workers who complain of insomnia or fatigue , but lack other sleep apnea symptoms.
These indications include sleep apnea, obesity, a risky neck diameter, or risky fullness of the flesh in the oropharynx. These channels vary in every lab and may be adapted to meet the doctor’s requests. There is a minimum of three channels for the EEG, one or two measure airflow, one or two are for chin muscle tone, one or more for leg movements, two for eye movements EOG , one or two for heart rate and rhythm, one for oxygen saturation, and one each for the belts, which measure chest wall movement and upper abdominal wall movement.
The movement of the belts is typically measured with piezoelectric sensors or respiratory inductance plethysmography.

But there is more and more research to draw on, reaching back to infancy and even to the womb. As the relatively new science of bilingualism pushes back to the origins of speech and language, scientists are teasing out the earliest differences between brains exposed to one language and brains exposed to two. Researchers have found ways to analyze infant behavior — where babies turn their gazes, how long they pay attention — to help figure out infant perceptions of sounds and words and languages, of what is familiar and what is unfamiliar to them.
Recently, researchers at the University of Washington used measures of electrical brain responses to compare so-called monolingual infants, from homes in which one language was spoken, to bilingual infants exposed to two languages. Still, the researchers found that at 6 months, the monolingual infants could discriminate between phonetic sounds, whether they were uttered in the language they were used to hearing or in another language not spoken in their homes.
By 10 to 12 months, however, monolingual babies were no longer detecting sounds in the second language, only in the language they usually heard. In contrast, the bilingual infants followed a different developmental trajectory. At 6 to 9 months, they did not detect differences in phonetic sounds in either language, but when they were older — 10 to 12 months — they were able to discriminate sounds in both.
Patricia Kuhl, co-director of the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences at the University of Washington and one of the authors of the study. Janet Werker, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia, studies how babies perceive language and how that shapes their learning. In one recent study , Dr.
Werker and her collaborators showed that babies born to bilingual mothers not only prefer both of those languages over others — but are also able to register that the two languages are different. In addition to this ability to use rhythmic sound to discriminate between languages, Dr. Werker has studied other strategies that infants use as they grow, showing how their brains use different kinds of perception to learn languages, and also to keep them separate.

The point at the outside of either eye in which the eyelids meet. K -Complex A distinct EEG waveform characterized by a sharp negative deflection followed by a slower postititive component. Additional marks made in the back of the head are similar to the marks made for F7 and F8. In the back of the head, these are the locations for T5 and T6.
This gives the first mark for P3.

Funnily enough, there is a lot more to oil production these days, but for as long as we need petroleum and gas as energy resources, there are still fortunes to be made. In the 19th century, crude oil was refined to make kerosene as the standard fuel for lamps. In , German engineer Karl Benz began the first commercial production of gasoline-fuelled motor vehicles with an internal combustion engine.
Offshore drill rig platform, oil refinery and a pumpjack. Today, oil and gas have a multitude of uses, from the basic necessities of every day modern life such as cooking appliances, heating and fuel for cars, to running businesses, transportation, manufacturing and other industrial purposes. Global demand for oil In its World Energy Outlook released in November , the International Energy Agency predicted four major shifts in the global energy system over the next 20 years. According to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries OPEC , the largest contribution to future energy demand is expected to come from natural gas, with demand projected to rise by nearly 34 million barrels of oil equivalent per day to reach a level of 93MMboed by Forecast global gas demand.
Source In addition, Forbes reported global oil-fuelled car sales were expected to reach 91 million in , versus 73 million in So, while there has been a recent social and environmental push away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources, with the recent lithium battery boom being one example, oil and gas will continue to have a large grip on the energy demand of the future.

Specifications became necessary when buildings got more complex, the entirety of the intended work results could not be captured in drawings without the drawings becoming too cluttered.

Electrode labeling[ edit ] Each electrode placement site has a letter to identify the lobe , or area of the brain it is reading from: There are also Z sites: These electrodes will not necessarily reflect or amplify lateral hemispheric cortical activity as they are placed over the corpus callosum , and do not represent either hemisphere adequately hemispheric laterality. Note that the required number of EEG electrodes, and their careful, measured placement, increases with each clinical requirement and modality.
Even numbered electrodes 2,4,6,8 refer to electrode placement on the right side of the head, whereas odd numbers 1,3,5,7 refer to those on the left; this applies to both EEG and EOG electrooculogram measurements of eyes electrodes, as well as ECG electrocardiography measurements of the heart electrode placement. Chin, or EMG electromyelogram electrodes are more commonly just referred to with “right,” “left,” and “reference,” or “common,” as there are usually only three placed, and they can be differentially referenced from the EEG and EOG reference sites.
The “A” sometimes referred to as “M” for mastoid process refers to the prominent bone process usually found just behind the outer ear less prominent in children and some adults. Measurement[ edit ] Specific anatomical landmarks are used for the essential measuring and positioning of the EEG electrodes. These are found with a tape measure, and often marked with a grease pencil, or “China marker.
After making and breaking a number of appointments I finally got the propeller balanced per the recommendation of Art at Able Air back in June. I approached this operation skeptically, feeling that the idea that you ought to balance your prop every hours was like the advice of shampoo manufacturers that you apply the stuff liberally and twice.
But I tend to make the miser’s assumption that everyone is out to swindle me. The traveling technician who performed the operation was named Leo Chrisostomo. Had I know this in advance I would have been even more suspicious, since the name, which means “golden-mouthed,” suggests someone particularly persuasive and therefore potentially misleading. Leo connected a couple of what I thought looked like accelerometers, but he said were now called “velocimeters” I think , to the front and back of the crankcase and had me run the engine at 1, and 2, rpm.
